DBacks Add Underrated McCarthy

Brandon McCarthy signed a 2-year $15.5M contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.  The right-hander was a top-25 pitcher in 2011, and was on his way to another fantastic season in 2012 before missing time due to a balky shoulder.

McCarthy then had his season ended early in September, when he took a line drive off of his head.  He survived the life-threatening injury and looks to continue the success he found since arriving in Oakland.

McCarthy has become an excellent control pitcher, issuing just 49 walks in 281.2 innings over the last two seasons.  He works primarily with a sinking fastball and an excellent cutter.  The lean 6’7″ Colorado high schooler can also spin a quality curveball and pull the string on a sinking changeup.

The Arizona air and altitude tend to inflate pitching statistics, so expect his HR/9 to take a hit at Chase Field, but McCarthy should still give the DBacks the quality outings they are looking for.
